    Fueling challenges & strategy

General, evidence-based guidance. Numbers should always be personalized to sweat rate, body mass, fitness and weather.

    Carbohydrate range

Many riders racing under about two hours do well starting near 30–60 grams of carbohydrate per hour, plus a practiced pre-race meal. Riders who go longer, or who have trained a higher rate, may sit toward the top of that range. It is a starting point, not a prescription.

    Fluid and sodium

Carry a bottle plan you can actually drink from on a cross-country lap. A mild-weather start is often about 300–700 milliliters per hour, with sodium around 300–600 milligrams per hour if you know you cramp or sweat heavily. Heat and body mass move those numbers.

    Separate from Fuego XL

Do not scale the XL guide down by mileage. The effort profile is different, and the 2027 XC course is its own route.

      Using XL caffeine timing

A late-race XL caffeine dose can land after an XC finish. Time caffeine to this event’s duration.
